The National Naval Aviation Museum, located on board NAS Pensacola, has opened a new Virtual Carrier Flight Deck. This immersive exhibit puts visitors inside a C-2 Greyhound aircraft for a briefing on flight deck operations and a simulated flight out to the carrier John C. Stennis. Once “on board,” they are treated to the sights, sounds and sensations of standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier using footage shot especially for the museum complemented by wind blowing across the flight deck, the smell of jet fumes, and the rumble of F/A-18 Hornet catapult launches and traps.

“This new immersive exhibit adds another dimension to what is already a great experience at the National Naval Aviation Museum,” said Museum Director, retired Navy Captain Bob Rasmussen. “It offers an amazing life-like experience of what it’s really like on the flight deck of the Navy aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.”

In addition, the new exhibit features displays explaining the history and role of Landing Signal Officers (LSO), Naval Aviators positioned on the flight deck to help guide incoming planes to safe landings on board ship. Visitors can also get an up-close look at the landing aids developed for used on board carriers as well as the workings of catapults that take carrier aircraft from a standstill to flying speed in a matter of seconds.
