CAPT RICHARD P. DEKE BORDONE , USN

CAPT RICHARD P. DEKE BORDONE , USN
1930 - 2007

Captain Bordone was born in Pittsburgh Pa. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1954, he was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1955 and was assigned to VA 44 for his first operational tour. He accumulated over 5200 flight hours, 585 carrier landings and 191 combat flights during his distinguished 30 year career which included three combat tours in Vietnam.

Captain Bordone may have been one of the most accomplished, but modest, aviators of the Vietnam War era. In 1963 he was assigned to the first A6A operational squadron (VA-75), and made the first ‘Intruder’ combat deployment to WestPac onboard the USS Independence, (CVA-62). In 1966 “Deke” was assigned to his second Vietnam combat tour, this time with VA-85 flying off the USS Kitty Hawk, (CVA-63). His third combat tour (1972 – 1973) was as Commander Carrier Air Wing Three, flying off the USS Saratoga (CVA 60). As a result of enemy action during the course of his three combat tours, he was forced to eject twice from which he incurred injuries.

A true Naval Aviation “legend”, it can only be said that nothing stopped him from accomplishing his assigned missions.

He was a member of the coveted Early and Pioneer Naval Aviators Association “Golden Eagles”.
