Mr. Eli Lilly's long life included his active leadership in the pharmaceutical company that he joined in 1907 and today bears his name, and in being one of the most generous philanthropists in the United States. He pushed his company in mass production techniques and initiatives in biomedical research. He founded the Lilly Endowment and gave millions in the areas of religion, higher education, character research, history, archaeology, and community service. He was recognized by the U.S. Navy for his enlightened policies allowing employees to fulfill their duties in Reserve and National Guard units., while maintaining their civilian positions with his firm.
