Home Front USA

Exhibits & Collections > Exhibits

In addition to the soldiers, sailors, airman, and Marines fighting on combat fronts around the world, those left behind waged a vital war of their own on the home front, working around the clock at factories that formed the “Arsenal of Democracy” and enduring strict rationing of everything from gasoline to butter.

Home Front U.S.A. beckons visitors to take a stroll down Main Street during 1943 to experience life as it was for the millions who stayed behind during World War II. Lining the street are storefront facades of Pensacola businesses of the era and a home displaying a starred flag that hung in many a residence of the time, symbolic of a family member serving in the military. The sounds of the 1943 Major League All Star game playing outside a barber shop and a period automobile complete the portrait of wartime life, the end of the street featuring a the front entrance of a U.S. Navy Recruiting Station through which visitors pass to reach dioramas of wartime life on a South Pacific Island and wartime aircraft carrier.
